October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month
October is here and that means it’s time to schedule your mammogram if you haven’t had one recently. October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month and that means you or someone you know has been affected by breast cancer. In fact, one in eight women will be diagnosed with breast cancer during their lifetime. You can honor breast cancer awareness month by spreading the word, getting a mammogram, adopting an early detection plan and taking care of yourself and encouraging the women you love to do the same.
Breast cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death in women, exceeded only by lung cancer. The chance that breast cancer will be responsible for a woman’s death is about 1 in 36 (about 3%), however death rates from breast cancer have been declining since about 1990, with larger decreases in women younger than 50. These decreases are believed to be the result of earlier detection through screening and increased awareness, as well as improved treatment as you will see from this infographic from Know Cancer.
